iRacing.com’s inaugural pro event to feature virtual Charlotte, Watkins Glen race tracks

E-sports are an increasingly popular form of entertainment and recreation. If you’re not familiar, e-sports is competitive video gaming, with tournaments and yes, even professional video gamers. One of those e-sports is race car driving and tonight will feature an inaugural pro racing event at iRacing.com.

The event will stream live tonight beginning at 8pm EST on iRacing.com. Two races will take place, including qualifying rounds.

For the first race, drivers will race digital Chevrolet Silverados around 25 laps on a virtual version of Charlotte Motor Speedway. And yes, the race will happen “under the lights.” The second race is 10 laps around Watkins Glen International with Mazda MX5s.

The Pro Race of Champions will feature professional drivers from a variety of live action racing leagues. Expected participants include:

  • NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Bobby Labonte
  • IndyCar drivers Justin Wilson and Sebastian Saavedra
  • Formula One veterans Stefan Johansson and Scott Speed
  • GRAND-AM Rolex Series champion Alex Gurney
  • ALMS GT champion Joey Hand
  • NHRA Funny Car winner Ron Capps
  • Australian V8 Supercar front runner Shane van Gisbergen

Drivers will be competing for over $2,000 in total cash, to be donated to charity. $1500 will be given to the winner’s charity of choice, $500 to the runner-up’s charity and $250 to the charity of choice for the third place driver.
